5th Grade Compositions

Last week in music students began writing their own compositions in ABA form.  They picked a theme for their composition and then chose four words that connected to their theme.  The words had  1 syllable, 2 syllables, 3 syllables, and 4 syllables.  They wrote out their first line of words with music notes to show the rhythm.  The second line of music contained the same words but they were in a different order to create a contrasting line.  The third line was the same as the beginning, therefore creating a composition in ABA form.  This week in class students performed for each other while playing a steady beat on drums, rhythm sticks, and maracas.

2nd Grade Dynamics

What are dynamics?  In music dynamics are how loud or soft the music is.  Today 2nd grade learned that soft music is called "piano" and loud music is "forte".  We played a game that incorporated dynamics along with singing the folk song Closet Key.

One student covers their eyes while Ms. Murphy gives the key to a student to hide in their hands.  That student then walks around the circle while the class sings the song above.  As the student on the outside of the circle gets closer to the key the class changes their dynamics to sing louder.  This gives a hint to the student in search of the key that they are getting closer!

Play Your Instruments 1st Grade!

Today in music Mrs. O's 1st grade class explored some different instruments while playing along with Ella Jerkins' song Play Your Instruments and Make A Pretty Sound.  We played and talked about cow bells, rhythm sticks, triangles, castanets, maracas, and woodblocks.  Students took turns playing the different instruments and keeping a beat along to the music.
